BIW Dimensional Lead Engineer

The Opportunity/Department

Body, Interiors and Exteriors creates Vehicle Body engineering solutions which meet or exceeds our customers’ expectations at the best value.

Body Structures are responsible for the design and development of the Body less doors, which include Body Pressings, castings, extrusions and body sealing media for all JLR models.  It also manages the component and proto-type supplier base to ensure timing & project control is maintained.

The department is responsible for developing designs from concept through to production. Our deliverables are released 3D CAD models which demonstrate robustness via FMEAs, FDJ Tracker, DVP's, APQP and ultimately PSW approved parts and meets each programme attribute objectives.

Based primarily in GDEC at Gaydon, the project engineer will work alongside the group leader & the other project engineers.  The successful candidate will report into the Body Structures department with matrix responsibility to the Group leader & the Module leader within the projects assigned.  There may be a need to work at other JLR manufacturing & design location to suit department needs.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

 

  • Develop Body Structure YS brochure, liaising with component areas to ensure the dimensional requirements for the Body Shell driven by other areas are understood and incorporated into the Dimensional YS brochure.
  • Cascaded dimensional inputs to the relevant engineers, from initial concept design through to Job 1 implementation.
  • Ensure that the Dimensional content for each panel is adequately cascaded to the suppliers via the SCSS process.
  • Ensure that dimensional content of SCSS is fully understood by all involved.
  • Resolve issues with component engineering and vehicle attribute teams to develop designs that meet targets
  • Ensure all appropriate JLR standards are met through-out design maturation.
  • Responsible for generation / supporting of:-
    •    - DFMEA's
    •    - FDJ Tracker
    •    
  • Keep all Dimensional Module documentation up to date including:
    • Meeting minutes
    • Foundation and Programme Design analysis documents
    • Quality history and bill of design
    • CAD
  • Undertake any other work as directed by their line manager in connection with their job as may be requested from time to time

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • Degree in Engineering or comparable qualification.
  • Excellent knowledge of GD&T and the application of locators to effect the best control.
  • Experience of automotive BIW design, stampings and body construction knowledge.
  • Strong understanding of and ability to manipulate CATIA V6 models
  • Good communication and presentation skills to all levels
  • Data analysis and PC skills including Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Good team player , who is self-motivated to deliver good quality products
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with strong influencing and engagement skills

 

Desirable:

  • Releasing experience and knowledge of JLR release and change management systems
  • Experience of problem solving tools e.g. 6 panel, PPS (8D), FMEA, Robustness, etc.
  • Experience of WERS, AIMs, eFDVS, APQP and PSW processes
