Lead Engineer - Exterior Trim

The Body Chassis Engineering team is one of the largest Engineering departments within the business and one of the most experienced groups of their type in the UK, having the knowledge and talent to hold their own against the best Body Chassis Engineers around the world. The purpose of this role is to coordinate the design, development, testing and introduction of Exterior Trim. Operating in an Agile model with cross-functional members within the squad, Lead Engineers will report into the relevant Group Leaders/Engineering Senior Manager and, where delivering on specific vehicle programmes, have an additional matrix report into relevant Agile Groups. The role requires the individual to deliver the commodity plan to quality, cost and time and lead on the technical content and integrity of specific components and systems across specific programmes.

 

Key Performance Indicators

  • Exterior Trim solutions will be delivered on time for Program Integration Points
  • Exterior Trim solutions will meet all functional requirements for the committed program gateways

 

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Deliver the Exterior Trim commodity plan to quality, cost and time, including maintaining the Worldwide Engineering Release System / 3DExperince
  • Own and deliver the Exterior Trim Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) deliverables
  • Manage Change Request, expenditure forecasting and the relevant supplier teams in support of delivery of the programme milestones
  • Manage DV and PV test plans, including detailed planning of test and development stages through to sign off and support Engineering test teams with rectification of issues
  • Work closely with vehicle attribute teams and the supplier to develop Exterior Trim solutions to achieve targets
  • Ensure all appropriate JLR standards are met through-out Exterior Trim delivery activites
  • Provide input into new feature development
  • Ensure all programme design solutions meet:
  • Programme targets for cost and weight
  • Legal regulations and Requirements Management & Design Verification documentation
  • Optical Quality and Premium Consumer Product Audit requirements
  • Keep all Module documentation up to date including:
  • Meeting minutes
  • RMDV
  • eAPQP/Smartsheets
  • Vehicle test plans
  • Undertake any other work as directed by their line manager in connection with their job as may be requested

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • Ability to develop Exterior Trim engineering solutions which meet defined targets on time and to required quality.
  • Good team working, organisation and communication skills including controlling the workload of supporting engineering team. Able to foster good working relationships with Purchasing/ STA and suppliers.
  • Ability to evaluate the performance and merits of Exterior Trim engineering output from suppliers or service partners to ensure that JLR requirements are satisfied.
  • Ability to plan Exterior Trim delivery
  • Ability to manage the workload contribution from the supplier and the supporting JLR team members
  • Ability to manage and evaluate DV/PV testing, report on results and resolve issues.
  • Bachelor degree or above is compulsory, degree in engineering (Electrical/Mechanical, Automotive or similar) 
  • At least 4 projects engineering development experience, especially the complex project experience.

 

Desirable:

  • Previous experience (ideally 10 years minimum) within Automotive OEM or Tier1 for chosen engineering specialism
  • Experience of JLR processes including WERS releasing, AIMs, APQP, FMEA, RMDV, Smartsheets, Teamcenter

  • Previous experience of managing resolution of business, technical and process issues within a Project Team environment
  • A good working knowledge of product creation & delivery, change control, product definition and change management processes
  • Bachelor degree or above is compulsory, degree in engineering (Electrical/Mechanical, Automotive or similar) 
  • At least 2 projects engineering development experience.

 

Desirable:

  • Previous experience within Exterior Trim engineering or programme planning departments (ideally 5 years minimum)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with strong influencing and engagement skills
