Outline of Department

• New Model Launch Engineer is the JLR representative/window person for the responsible suppliers’ process industrialization

• To guarantee the whole industrialization for responsible parts and it’s product conformity

• New Model Launch Engineer has the responsibility for the production part approval process for high priority components as agreed with the Programme team.

 

Basic Purpose of the role

The STA New Model Launch Engineer role provides a link to the suppliers and interacts closely with both Programme STA and Purchasing organisations.

The STA New Model Launch Engineer role requires frequent travel to supplier's sites. The extent of this travel depends upon various conditions, including the supplier's level, specific type of activities, urgent situations, and distance to supplier(s).

The basic function include:

  • Provide sourcing recommendation for the potential suppliers and involvements GSP process with global CTs and purchasing team
  • Implementation of CCDS process for priority programs, Make sure supplier understands all JLR requirements (engineering, quality and program timing etc.)
  • Training of JLR system, process and tools for new developed suppliers
  • Lead the implementation of the APQP, Launch, Phase PPAP and Current tasks. Make sure supplier follows APQP process and JLR program timing requirements are being met
  • Ensure the supplier sets up robust manufacturing process for producing parts
  • Ensure flawless program launch and prevent any disruptions at JLR assembly plants during new vehicle launch
  • Provide immediate containment and proper controls at the supplier site and root cause analysis for launch issues
  • Play as a liaison between Purchasing, Engineering, Manufacturing, and suppliers to resolve supplier quality issues and to provide technical support
  • Escalation of issues and potential risks to seek both supplier and JLR management support for solution
  • Provide onsite support for assigned issues to protect JLR facilities from major impact of quality, production or delivery issues. Provide supports as requested for tier suppliers or other emergent cases

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct potential supplier diagnostic for assigned commodity and provide STA recommendation to support sourcing
  • Conduct CCDS APQP reviews as required, attend or lead regular supplier program meeting, assist in the implementation and monitoring of APQP with selected product suppliers
  • Develop the new suppliers for the specific commodities. Ensure supplier understanding of product, engineering specification, quality, program timing and submission requirement through the required e-system or process
  • Review and assure supplier set up robust manufacturing processes and quality systems, effective usage Lean manufactory knowledge
  • Assure supplier process control planning (SCSS). Determine part critical characteristics and required process controls
  • Review tool, fixture, and part design. Conduct supplier process reviews.
  • Review and approve supplier Plant Layout, Process Flow Diagram, PFMEA, Process Control Plan, PPAP plan and capacity planning analysis
  • Review and approve supplier production trial run, part dimension measurement, material and functional tests, process capability studies, PPAP submission and CAR (capacity analysis report)
  • Supplier industrialization progress, production readiness, ramp up plan, production and shipping plan
  • Assure tier 1 supplier has good controls on tier suppliers
  • Regularly exchange information with others inside and outside the work group, including JLR and supplier facilities
  • Program launch quality and delivery performance monitoring, communication, risk identification and escalation to drive correction before impacting JLR facilities

 

Education | Qualification

• University Degree, preferably in Engineering or related field

• Minimum 3-5 years supplier management working experiences in automotive related company, preferably as OEM STA/SQE

• Excellent communication skills in English

• Able to travel on short notice within China domestic or Asia Pacific, work other city of home location on business travel basis

• Able to conduct/participate conference calls or deal with urgency considering non-standard working time

• Basic PC skills, email, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, higher level is prefer

• Demonstrated high level of interpersonal communication skills to effectively lead, motivate, and facilitate others in group situations and instruct others in new techniques

• Proficient in print reading and interpretation, and part measurement. Preferably knowledge of geometric design and tolerance

• Ability to effectively organize and plan

• Experiences with manufacturing, quality, engineering or assembly plant process, procedures, facilities and equipment

• Experiences with industrial quality or supplier quality standards, policies, and procedures

• Experiences in quality problems investigation and applying special technical judgment to develop possible solutions

Together with a relevant degree , experience in the following areas would be beneficial :

• Expertise with problem solving tools i.e. 5 Why Analysis, 5 Phase, 8D, etc.

• High level of analytical ability to assess and identify appropriate alternative courses of action for definition and resolution of problems that are somewhat unique and diverse.  Ability to exercise independent judgment is required

• Preferably with experience in lean manufacturing

• Experience with error proofing, SPC, DOE, DFSS etc.

• Knowledge of specific manufacturing processes and commodities would be preferred, for example:

  •  Electric Drive Unit
  • Transmision Gears
  •  Battery components
  • Electronics / PCBA
