HV Battery Mechanical Lead Engineer

Location: Shanghai-New Bund

 The role is as a HV Battery Mechanical Lead Engineer based in China Battery team working with UK Battery design and release teams as part of the overall Powertrain electrified engineering group. Reporting to the Battery team leader, the role would be responsible for the delivery of the battery mechanical system, (including mounting to the vehicle chassis) to meet quality, cost, weight, timing and functional targets. As HV Battery Mechanical Lead Engineer you would work with design & release engineers to ensure the designs and drawings are completed and correctly cascaded to suppliers and battery manufacturing plant.

 

Key Responsibilities  

  • Manage product development processes and deliver according to component creation and delivery system (CCDS) on battery mechanical components.
  • Lead and coordinate cross-functional CCDS team including purchasing, design, validation, STA, supplier ,and manufacturing to ensure all APQP deliverables are fulfilled with agreed status by the CCDS team.
  • Support the Design and Release of multiple parts across various battery programmes.
  • Ensure robust timing plans are in place that achieves Program milestones and targets (Quality, Cost, Functionality, Weight, and timing).
  • Develop a Statement of Requirements to support supplier sourcing and work with the matched pair through the GSP process.
  • Develop and release updates with UK D&R team to Engineering Specifications if required.
  • Ensure all right level design documents (3D, drawing, SCSS, STJLRs, TPJLRs, and etc…) are correctly cascaded to suppliers and manufacturing plant.
  • Lead issue resolution (AIMS) and support Change Management (iCreate), processes to ensure that all changes are implemented robustly and support programme objectives.
  • Fully utilize the ETAG, (End of test Battery Strip process) from completed functional, rig and vehicle tests, along with Warranty feedback to ensure proactive identification and resolution of component issues.
  • Drive the resolution of cross functional technical / manufacturing issues using a Global 8D process.
  • Lead suppliers through design phase, procurement of prototypes, production tooling and ensure components perform to requirements.

 

Skills, experience and qualifications

Essential:  

  • Degree in relevant engineering discipline with a minimum 5 years relevant experience.
  • A knowledge of typical BEV and PHEV battery system solutions and technologies.
  • Experience of complex mechanical packaging and structural solutions.
  • Experience of typical manufacturing solutions such as extrusions, castings, pressings and implications of manufacturing process on mechanical design.
  • Experience of defining and/or using appropriate analysis tools to optimise and verify mechanical and structural properties such that you can define the required analysis.
  • Understanding of typical battery characteristics -  cell types, electrical configuration, cell mounting limitations, cooling and heating requirements, venting.
  • Understanding of regulatory needs applicable to BEV and PHEV solutions.
  • A working knowledge of the design and release process
  • Strong people skills and the ability to work individually and in a cross functional team.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience of meeting deadlines.
  • The ability to project manage a design through to production and manage several parts across multiple vehicle programmes
  • Experience of Change Management
  • Working Knowledge of Problem Resolution Techniques e.g. 8D
  • The ability to make effective decisions in the best interest of the business and customer.
  • The ability to understand commodity timing plans (including Design Verification plans, programme plans and supplier timing plans)
  • Experience of design FMEA’s
